Biography
Peter Hong Pyong-ju and his brother Paul came from a Korean family with a history of Catholic faith and persecution. Both became catechists, teaching people preparing for baptism, caring for the sick and undertaking responsibilities entrusted to them by the missionaries. During the 1839 persecution they sheltered foreign priests at considerable personal risk.
After their arrest, neither brother revealed the whereabouts of other Catholics or abandoned his faith. Peter was executed at Tangkogae in January 1840; Paul was executed separately the following day. Peter's entry therefore records one individual, while acknowledging the brother with whom he shared much of his ministry.
