Biography

Peter Đoàn Công Quý was born at Búng in a family whose parents had moved from northern Vietnam. He received early instruction in a parish household, entered the seminary at Thị Nghè, and was selected for further study at Penang. Returning after several years, he taught children and assisted Catholic communities during persecution. He was ordained in 1858.

Peter traveled in disguise to continue pastoral work around Cái Mơn. When women religious were arrested, he considered presenting himself to protect them, but obeyed instructions forbidding this step. His superiors then assigned him to Đầu Nước on Cù Lao Giêng, where he was soon captured. He died as a martyr in 1859 and was canonized in 1988.
