Biography
Peter de Betancurt grew up in a poor family in Tenerife and worked as a shepherd before leaving for the Americas. He eventually reached Guatemala, where he worked in textiles. An attempt to prepare for priesthood did not succeed, but it did not end his commitment to Christian service.
He became a Franciscan tertiary in 1655 and remained a layman. His work included people facing illness, poverty, exploitation, or abandonment. A small hospital for convalescents, begun in 1658, became part of the foundation associated with the Bethlehemite community. Canonized in 2002, he offers an example of a substantial vocation outside ordained ministry and of care for those ordinary institutions had overlooked.
