Biography
Peter Choe Chang-hub grew up in a family connected with government service but experienced poverty after persecution stripped away its property. His early contact with Catholicism was interrupted; he later resumed learning the faith and was baptized during the cholera outbreak of 1821. With his wife, Magdalene Son, he endured the loss of many children.
Peter became known for his faithful religious practice. Arrested in 1839, he refused both to deny God and to disclose the whereabouts of fellow Catholics. He was executed outside Seoul's Small West Gate in December. Magdalene and their daughter Barbara subsequently suffered martyrdom as distinct members of the same family.
