Biography

Pedro Poveda Castroverde was ordained in 1897 and worked in Guadix among families living in cave dwellings. He organized education for children and practical training for adults. Later, as a canon at Covadonga, he considered how Christian faith and strong professional preparation could support teachers working in public education.

The educational initiatives he began in 1911 developed into the Teresian Association. Its work emphasized the formation of lay educators rather than treating faith and learning as separate concerns. Poveda was killed during the religious persecution of the Spanish Civil War in 1936. His canonization in 2003 recognizes both his martyrdom and a sustained contribution to education.
