Biography

Paul Nguyễn Văn Mỹ was born at Sơn Nga in Hà Nam and was originally named Nguyễn Văn Hữu. His Catholic parents encouraged his education and early entry into church service. Bishop Longer renamed him Mỹ. After study at Vĩnh Trị he became a catechist at Bầu Nọ, where he taught Catholics and helped care for the young missionary Jean-Charles Cornay.

When officials surrounded Bầu Nọ in 1837, Paul helped arrange a hiding place for Cornay and concealed objects used in worship. An informer identified him and two other catechists, and all were taken to Sơn Tây. Paul's sentence was delayed, leaving him in captivity for many additional months. He died in 1838 and was canonized in 1988.
