Biography

Paul Ho Hyob was a Korean soldier assigned to a training camp. The surviving institutional account gives relatively little information about his earlier life, concentrating instead on his arrest and imprisonment. He initially refused demands to renounce Catholicism, but later yielded under prolonged mistreatment.

Paul soon returned to the judge and reaffirmed that he remained a Catholic. His renewed profession was followed by further abuse and fatal beatings in Seoul. The bishops' biography places his death at the end of January or beginning of February 1840. His story is remembered for repentance and recovered fidelity, not for an absence of weakness.
