St. Paisios of Mount Athos

Arsenios Eznepidis was born on July 25, 1924, in Pharasa, a Cappadocian town in Asia Minor. His family, like many Greek Christians in the region, was forced to flee during the population exchanges of 1924, and they settled on the island of Thasos, then later in northern Greece. Raised in a devout household, young Arsenios served as an altar boy and developed an early attraction to monastic life, though he first worked in his family's leather trade and briefly served in the Greek army during the civil conflict of the late 1940s. He reportedly experienced a calling to monasticism while still a young man, and after completing his military service he made his way to Mount Athos, where he was tonsured a monk and given the name Paisios.

Paisios eventually moved to the Monastery of Esphigmenou and later lived as a hermit on Mount Athos. In 1966, he was sent by the Athonite community to minister to Greek soldiers fighting in Cyprus during the tensions of that period; while there, he famously cared for wounded soldiers, including reportedly extracting a live grenade from one man's abdomen in an episode that has become part of his popular legend, though some details of this story are difficult to verify independently. He returned to Mount Athos and spent years in various hermitages, including a difficult period in the Sinai Peninsula, before settling into the small cell of the Panagoudha hermitage near the Monastery of Koutloumousiou, where he would become most widely known.

Throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and into the early 1990s, thousands of pilgrims began making their way to his humble cell seeking counsel. Elder Paisios, as he was known, became famous for his combination of strict Orthodox asceticism and warm, often humorous pastoral sensitivity. He is remembered for his deep pastoral work with people suffering from modern psychological and spiritual difficulties, as well as for his letters and recorded conversations collected in several volumes of spiritual counsel. He was especially known for emphasizing the Greek Orthodox concept of "philotimo," which he described as a selfless, noble, and generous disposition of the heart toward others.

In his final years, Elder Paisios suffered from cancer and other illnesses, undergoing surgery and enduring considerable physical suffering. He spent his last months at the monastery of the Theotokos Soumela in northern Greece, where he died on July 12, 1994. He is venerated as a saint within the Orthodox Christian tradition, and his official feast day is celebrated on July 12. He is recognized as patron of radio operators and the signaling corps, a patronage associated with his reported interest in communications and his gift for 'transmitting' spiritual truth across distances. His tomb at Soumela remains a pilgrimage site, and his sayings continue to be widely circulated in Greek, English, and other languages.
