Biography

Olympias was a wealthy widow in Constantinople who devoted her resources to care for the sick, the poor and women living in religious communities. The Catholic account identifies her as a deaconess and associates her with the patriarchs Nectarius and John Chrysostom. Her support for Chrysostom continued when he was removed from his see.

That loyalty brought financial penalties and exile. Letters Chrysostom addressed to her preserve evidence of their spiritual friendship during these trials and of the encouragement he offered her. She died in exile at Nicomedia, remembered for practical generosity and continued fidelity. Her position as a deaconess belonged to the particular institutions of the late ancient Church.
