Biography
Noël Chabanel was a French Jesuit teacher who sought missionary work in New France but found the transition extremely difficult. Learning a new language and adapting to unfamiliar daily conditions challenged him. Although permitted to return to France, he chose to remain and made a commitment to persevere in the missions.
He worked with John de Brébeuf and later joined Charles Garnier at Etarita. When danger increased, he was sent back toward the mission headquarters. He died in 1649. The Jesuit account remembers a missionary whose continued service involved persistent struggle rather than easy adaptation or uninterrupted confidence.
