Biography

Nicholas was born Giovanni Battista Clemente Saggio in a poor family at Longobardi in Calabria. Financial circumstances kept him from formal schooling, and he worked with his father in the fields. Frequent contact with the local Minims nurtured his religious vocation, and he first joined their spiritual life as a lay tertiary.

He subsequently entered the Minims and took the name Nicholas. His responsibilities included gardening, cooking, caring for provisions, sacristy work and serving as porter. The institutional biography presents these ordinary duties as the setting of his prayer and charitable service. His life is associated with the congregation founded by Francis of Paola. Francis canonized Nicholas of Longobardi in 2014.
