Biography

Nicholas Bùi Đức Thể came from Kiên Trung in Nam Định. Soon after entering military service he was caught in a campaign to force Catholic soldiers to renounce Christianity. He resisted punishment for months with Augustine Huy and Dominic Đạt. Officials then tortured another villager in front of him, threatening further harm to others unless Nicholas complied. He stepped over the cross and was released.

Nicholas regretted that act and joined his companions in deciding to retract it publicly. He traveled with Augustine to Huế, where they affirmed their Christianity before the ruler despite renewed danger. Both were condemned and executed in 1839. He was canonized in 1988.
