Biography

Nicetius, known in French as Nizier, served as a priest before becoming bishop of Lyon. The Catholic account remembers his manual work and generosity toward poor people, as well as his willingness to forgive. Gregory of Tours, his nephew, wrote about his life and preserves an important part of the testimony about him.

His episcopal work included care for church discipline and participation in regional councils. He provided for the singing of psalms, connecting public worship with his wider pastoral responsibilities. He died in 573. The testimony of Gregory of Tours preserves both admiration for his generosity and acknowledgement that the bishop could recognize and regret his own hasty temper.
