Biography
Nazaria Ignacia March Mesa was born in Madrid and experienced her family’s financial difficulties before they moved to Mexico. There she encountered sisters caring for abandoned older people and entered their congregation in 1908. After novitiate in Spain, she was sent with companions to Oruro in Bolivia.
For more than twelve years she served older people while carrying out responsibilities as cook, porter, secretary and assistant superior. The poverty around her led her to seek a wider missionary response. She founded the Missionary Crusaders of the Church, whose work extended evangelization and practical assistance among poor communities in Latin America. Francis canonized Nazaria Ignacia March Mesa in 2018.
