Biography
Michael Nguyễn Huy Mỹ was originally named Nguyễn Huy Diệu; the familiar name Mỹ came from one of his children. Orphaned while young, he lived with an aunt who arranged his education in Chinese characters and some instruction in medicine. He married a daughter of the Catholic leader Nguyễn Đích and became a village official at Vĩnh Trị.
Michael prayed with his household and helped people facing poverty. During persecution Michael refused to abandon Christianity despite the responsibilities and pressures of his public position. He was taken to execution with Father James Đỗ Mai Năm and his father-in-law Nguyễn Đích in 1838. He was canonized in 1988.
