Biography

Michael Hồ Đình Hy was the youngest child in a large Catholic family at Nho Lâm near Huế. Originally called Thục, he received early religious instruction and education in Chinese characters. His work attracted the attention of examiners, who recruited him into the public administration. He married Lucy Tân and settled near Huế while advancing through the ranks of government service.

Michael's position at court did not exempt him from the persecution of Catholics. His imprisonment ended in a death sentence carried out by beheading in 1857. Before execution he made a final act of prayer while a priest stood among the spectators. His relatives and fellow Catholics buried him at Phủ Cam. He was canonized in 1988.
