Biography

Mark was bishop of Rome for a short period in 336. He is a different person from Mark the Evangelist. The Catholic calendar preserves his memory on October 7, while the surviving outline of his pontificate is much more limited than that of many later popes.

The Martyrology associates him with the church in the Pallacina district of Rome and with a cemetery basilica on the Via Ardeatina, where he was buried. These places are useful anchors for his biography. Other practices have been attributed to him in later tradition, but the evidence given here does not establish those attributions securely. His entry therefore concentrates on the churches, burial and brief episcopal ministry recorded by the Catholic source.
