Biography
Mark Chong Ui-bae was a teacher who initially rejected Catholicism. Seeing the execution of Bishop Imbert and his companions in 1839 prompted him to read Catholic books and seek baptism. Bishop Ferréol later appointed him a catechist, and he served Catholics and people preparing to enter the Church.
Mark cared for sick people and orphans, lived simply with his wife, and welcomed Just Ranfer de Bretenières while the missionary learned Korean. During the 1866 persecution he helped others escape but was arrested himself. He was executed at Saenamteo in March. His long service grew from a conversion shaped by witnessing an earlier generation of martyrs.
