Biography
Born Virginie Alodie Paradis in Canada, Marie-Léonie was educated by the Congregation of Notre-Dame before entering the Marianite Sisters of Holy Cross as a teenager. She professed vows in 1857 and served in education in Canada and New York. Later assignments brought her to the Holy Cross province in Indiana and then Memramcook.
At Saint Joseph’s College a group of young women gathered around her, and guidance from Camille Lefebvre helped clarify their vocation. She founded the Little Sisters of the Holy Family to support priests and the daily work of colleges and religious communities. Her leadership developed through years of teaching, shared religious life and practical institutional service. Francis canonized Marie-Léonie Paradis in 2024.
