Biography
Anne Eugénie Milleret grew up in a prosperous family at Metz with intellectual curiosity and an interest in social questions. Her father’s bankruptcy and her parents’ separation disrupted that life; her mother later died of cholera in Paris. Listening to Henri Lacordaire’s preaching at Notre-Dame helped bring her toward a deeper commitment to Catholic faith.
She became the founder of the Religious of the Assumption, taking the name Marie Eugénie of Jesus. The congregation devoted itself to the Christian education of young women. She continued developing its spiritual and educational approach over many years, linking a renewed religious life with her concern for society and the formation of students. Benedict XVI canonized Marie Eugénie Milleret in 2007.
