Biography

Marie Alphonsine was born into a Catholic family in Jerusalem and educated by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Apparition. After obtaining her father’s consent, she entered their novitiate as a teenager. She taught religion in Jerusalem and Bethlehem and organized associations supporting the Christian life of girls and mothers.

She later became a cofounder of the Sisters of the Holy Rosary of Jerusalem, continuing educational and religious service in the Holy Land. Her private diaries describe reported Marian experiences that influenced this undertaking. Those descriptions belong to her spiritual testimony and are distinguished from the documented formation of the congregation and her work as a teacher. Francis canonized Marie Alphonsine Danil Ghattas in 2015.
