Biography

María Maravillas of Jesus entered the Discalced Carmelites at El Escorial in 1919 after caring for her father during his illness. She helped establish the monastery at Cerro de los Ángeles, inaugurated in 1926. Other Carmelite foundations followed, including one in Kottayam, India.

The Vatican's account explicitly explains that she was not creating a new order: she sought to deepen the existing tradition of Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross. The Spanish Civil War displaced her community, bringing practical uncertainty into a life devoted to prayer. She continued to guide monasteries through later years and died in 1974. Her canonization took place in 2003.
