Biography
Maria Josefa Sancho de Guerra discerned her vocation through several changes of direction. Illness interrupted an early plan for enclosed religious life, and she later entered the Servants of Mary. Conversations with spiritual advisers helped her recognize a call to a new community devoted to caring for sick people.
In 1871 she and three companions founded the Servants of Jesus in Bilbao. The sisters nursed people in hospitals and in their own homes. Maria Josefa guided the congregation for decades and continued through correspondence when illness limited her activity. Her biography shows discernment unfolding through experience, counsel, and the needs of others. The Vatican records her canonization in 2000.
