Biography

Anna Maria Rubatto grew up in Carmagnola and moved to Turin after the deaths of her parents. She worked as a companion to a wealthy woman while teaching catechism and visiting sick and disadvantaged people. During a stay at Loano she helped an injured laborer, an encounter that brought her into contact with a planned religious community.

A Capuchin priest invited her to direct the undertaking. After prayer and consultation she accepted, taking the name Maria Francesca of Jesus. In 1885 she and four companions began the Capuchin Tertiary Sisters of Loano, with her as first superior. The foundation continued her earlier connection between ordinary work, religious commitment and practical care for neighbors. Francis canonized Maria Francesca Rubatto in 2022.
