Biography

Maria De Mattias grew up in Vallecorsa during years of local violence. Although she lacked formal schooling, conversations with her father introduced her to Scripture. Her developing devotion to Christ's blood emphasized the worth of each person, offering a response to a setting where bloodshed often expressed hatred and revenge.

Inspired by a mission preached by Gaspar del Bufalo and guided by Giovanni Merlini, she founded the Adorers of the Blood of Christ in Acuto in 1834. Teaching and religious instruction became practical expressions of this conviction about human dignity. She died in 1866. The Vatican records her canonization in 2003, distinguishing her recognized sainthood from Merlini's status described in the historical biography.
