Biography
Born Adelaide Brando in Naples, Maria Cristina sought religious life from a young age. Poor health repeatedly brought her home from different communities, but she continued developing a project centered on Eucharistic adoration. With companions she began perpetual adoration in Naples in 1880 and later moved the community to Casoria.
The congregation received the name Expiatory Victims of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in 1903, when Maria Cristina and nineteen companions made perpetual vows. Its prayer was connected with the Christian formation of children. Support from Ludovico of Casoria and local clergy helped the community take shape despite illness and practical obstacles. Francis canonized Maria Cristina Brando in 2015.
