Biography
Maria Crescentia Höss came from a poor family in Kaufbeuren and entered its Franciscan community in 1703. Her early years there were difficult. She later served as porter, novice mistress, and superior, giving increasing responsibility to a woman whose admission had initially been reluctant.
The Vatican's biography describes her attention to the Gospels, prayer, silence, and the spiritual welfare of the community. People also sought her counsel through letters. As superior she placed the sisters' character and vocation ahead of financial advantage. Her life invites attention to patient formation and ordinary duties rather than only to extraordinary experiences. She died in 1744 and was canonized in 2001.
