Biography

Magdalene Son So-byog grew up amid family separation caused by persecution and bereavement. She married Peter Choe Chang-hub and endured the deaths of nine of their eleven children in infancy. The bishops' biography remembers her gentle manner and skill in sewing and embroidery alongside her eventual commitment to Catholicism.

Arrested during the persecution of 1839, Magdalene refused to identify fellow believers. She arranged for relatives to care for the young child who had accompanied her into prison. After repeated mistreatment, she was executed at Tangkogae in January 1840. Her husband and daughter Barbara also have distinct martyr biographies.
