Biography

Luke Hwang Sok-tu encountered Catholicism while traveling to take a government examination. Religious books and conversation led him to turn toward the faith, despite his father's opposition. He later served as a teacher of Chinese literature and a catechist, helping his household and others learn Catholic doctrine.

Luke assisted Bishops Berneux and Daveluy and collaborated on religious publications. Although priesthood was considered for him, the plan did not receive approval; he remained a lay collaborator. Arrested with Daveluy in 1866, he explained his faith during interrogation and was executed at Galmaemot in March. His lay status is preserved rather than being changed into an invented ordination.
