Biography

Luigi Orione studied with John Bosco in Turin before entering the diocesan seminary at Tortona. While still a seminarian, he opened a youth center and a boarding school for poor boys. After his ordination in 1895, companions gathered around this work, developing into the Little Work of Divine Providence and its religious communities.

The bishop approved the Sons of Divine Providence in 1903. Orione also helped people affected by the earthquakes in Messina and Reggio in 1908 and the Marsica region in 1915. His ministry joined education, emergency assistance, and a strong commitment to the Church. He died in 1940 and was canonized in 2004.
