Biography
Luigi Maria Palazzolo grew up in Bergamo and, as a young person, regularly visited poor and sick neighbors. Ordained in 1850, he devoted himself to an oratory in a crowded and impoverished part of the city. He used inherited resources to enlarge its space and develop opportunities for games and education.
Recognizing that laborers often missed school and catechism, he arranged evening classes for young people and adults who worked during the day. He later founded the Sisters of the Poor and the Brothers of the Holy Family. These communities sustained his concern for children and other people needing material assistance and Christian formation. Francis canonized Luigi Maria Palazzolo in 2022.
