Biography

Luigi Guanella grew up in an Alpine farming family and was ordained for the diocese of Como in 1866. Parish work and a period with John Bosco helped develop his concern for children in need. An early school met opposition and closed, but he continued looking for ways to provide lasting assistance.

At Pianello Lario he encountered women already serving poor neighbors; their work helped form the Daughters of Saint Mary of Providence. In Como he established a house of care and gathered priests as the Servants of Charity. These communities extended assistance to people in poverty and distress in Italy and nearby Switzerland. Benedict XVI canonized Luigi Guanella in 2011.
