Biography

Ludovico was born Arcangelo Palmentieri in Casoria and learned carpentry before entering the Franciscans. Ordained in 1837, he taught chemistry, mathematics and physics. He later turned increasingly toward care for poor and sick people, first creating a small pharmacy for ill friars and then a more substantial infirmary in Naples.

He also arranged to free and educate African children who had been sold into slavery. To sustain works of charity he established the Brothers of Charity and the Franciscan Sisters of Saint Elizabeth. His ministry brought scientific knowledge, community organization and religious commitment into projects responding to the needs around him. Francis canonized Ludovico of Casoria in 2014.
