Biography

Ludmila was a duchess of Bohemia who became Christian with her husband. She helped provide the Christian education of her grandson Wenceslaus, linking her household responsibilities with the growth of the faith in the region. Nominis cites Vatican reporting that remembers her as Bohemia's first saint and an important figure in that early Christian history.

She was killed in 921 amid conflict within the ruling family. Catholic tradition remembers her as a martyr and attributes the conspiracy to her daughter-in-law Drahomira. Her influence on Wenceslaus's formation endured beyond her death, giving her a place in the early Christian history of Bohemia while leaving the surrounding political motives difficult to reconstruct fully.
