Biography

Louis Bertrand was a Dominican from Valencia who served as a missionary among the indigenous peoples of the Americas. Nominis remembers both his preaching and his opposition to abuses by Spanish officials. Its account describes his frustration that cruelty and greed among colonists undermined the religious message he hoped to communicate.

He returned to Valencia and undertook responsibilities within his order, including the formation of novices and service as prior. The same commitment that had taken him overseas continued in the education of younger friars. Catholic memory particularly emphasizes his defense of indigenous people against oppression. Accounts differ over some chronological details of his missionary career and death.
