Biography

Lodovico Pavoni was born in Brescia and ordained in 1807. His early ministry emphasized poor young people, and he later became rector of the basilica of Saint Barnabas. In the adjoining former convent he created an institute where boys could find accommodation, Christian formation and workshops that prepared them for employment.

Printing became an especially important part of the institute, alongside other trades and an agricultural school. He welcomed children orphaned during a cholera epidemic and later admitted deaf students. The Sons of Mary Immaculate grew from his wish to make this educational work enduring through a religious community formed with his collaborators. Francis canonized Lodovico Pavoni in 2016.
