Biography

Liborius was a fourth-century bishop of Le Mans in France. The surviving Catholic commemoration gives a restrained outline of his identity; many familiar details belong to the later history of his veneration. His relics have been kept at Paderborn in Germany since their transfer in 836, linking the two churches across many centuries.

He became patron of Paderborn's cathedral and a focus of continuing relations between Paderborn and Le Mans. Devotional images often show stones with a book, reflecting the tradition of invoking his intercession for illnesses involving stones. That symbolism is part of his cult, not a medical promise. Vatican News lists him on April 9; local celebrations can use other dates.
