Biography

Léonie Aviat was educated at the Visitation school in Troyes, where she encountered the spirituality of Saint Francis de Sales. Industrial work was drawing young women into the city, often without adequate support. With Louis Brisson, she helped develop a community responding to the circumstances of these workers.

She entered the work in 1866 and took the religious name Frances de Sales. The Oblate Sisters of Saint Francis de Sales combined religious formation with practical support and education. Her later life included exile in Italy, where she died in 1914. Canonized in 2001, she belonged to a distinct congregation and should not be confused with the Salesian sisters founded in the tradition of John Bosco.
