Biography
Leonard Murialdo grew up in Turin and studied with the Piarists at Savona. A period of spiritual difficulty brought him home, where renewed religious commitment eventually led to the priesthood. Ordained in 1851, he taught catechism in an oratory and, with John Bosco’s encouragement, became director of the Saint Louis oratory.
Visits to poor households strengthened his understanding of the difficulties young people faced. His educational work combined catechesis, schooling and recreation. In 1873 he founded the Congregation of Saint Joseph to serve young people, especially those who were poor or abandoned, giving an enduring community structure to his educational and charitable initiatives. Paul VI canonized Leonard Murialdo in 1970.
