Biography

Leo IX came from Alsace and served as bishop of Toul before becoming pope. He worked for religious reform through travel and councils, opposing the purchase of ecclesiastical office and encouraging better discipline. The Catholic account remembers his choice of collaborators who would continue that work beyond his own pontificate.

His later years were troubled by conflict with the Normans in southern Italy and captivity after military defeat. He returned to Rome and died in 1054. Relations with Constantinople also became gravely strained during this period. His pontificate brought together the effort to reform Western ecclesiastical life and difficult political and religious divisions that outlasted his own leadership.
