Biography

Lawrence Nguyễn Văn Hưởng grew up in a poor Catholic family at Kẻ Sài. After his father's death he worked for an uncle, who hoped to adopt him and eventually pass on property. Lawrence instead sought preparation for priesthood. A parish priest arranged his education, and he entered the seminary at Vĩnh Trị. When persecution forced the school to close, he returned home and worked with medicines while retaining his religious vocation.

As a priest, Lawrence was captured while traveling to visit a gravely ill person on behalf of an older colleague. Interrogation and a death sentence followed his refusal to renounce Christianity. He was beheaded, and Catholics recovered his remains. He was canonized in 1988.
