Biography

Kilian is remembered as an Irish missionary bishop who preached in the region of Würzburg. His ministry forms part of the movement of Irish Christians to continental Europe during the early medieval period. The Catholic commemoration associates his death with the priest Coloman and the deacon Totnan, his companions in mission.

Later accounts place their killing within a conflict over the marriage of a local ruler. Those narrative details come through the received tradition and should not be treated as a surviving contemporary trial record. The Martyrology identifies Kilian personally as a bishop and martyr. His July 8 commemoration preserves that individual identity within the shared witness of the three missionaries.
