Biography

Just Ranfer de Bretenières grew up in a French family that emphasized religious education and charity. After study at Saint-Sulpice, he entered the Paris Foreign Missions Society and was ordained in 1864. His journey to Korea involved months of waiting in Manchuria and a difficult coastal voyage.

He arrived in 1865 and studied Korean in the household of the catechist Mark Chong Ui-bae. His early ministry included baptism, confession and care for the sick. Arrested shortly after Bishop Berneux in 1866, he remained faithful under interrogation and was executed at Saenamteo in March. His brief mission depended heavily on local Catholics' hospitality and guidance.
