Biography

Julius I was bishop of Rome from 337 to 352, during the controversies surrounding the Church's confession of the divinity of Christ. He supported Athanasius of Alexandria when that bishop was driven into exile and received him in Rome. His ministry connected pastoral hospitality with the defense of Catholic teaching.

Julius also helped bring about the Council of Sardica as the dispute continued among bishops and imperial authorities. The Martyrology remembers his steadfastness and his support for Athanasius rather than attributing the resolution of the entire controversy to one pontificate. His burial at the cemetery of Calepodius in Rome is commemorated on April 12. He is distinct from later popes with the same name.
