Biography

Julie Billiart was born at Cuvilly in France and taught the catechism from a young age. She worked to help support her family and later lived for many years with paralysis. Her commitment to Christian education continued through these difficulties and through the upheaval of the French revolutionary period.

In 1804 she founded the Sisters of Notre Dame, whose mission included educating girls from poor families. Difficulties with diocesan authorities in Amiens led the community to move to Namur in 1809. She died there on April 8, 1816. Her legacy is a religious congregation dedicated to education, with a history that includes both the perseverance of its founder and the practical challenge of establishing schools and community life.
