Biography
Juan Grande Román trained in textile work before turning toward care for people who had little support. After a period of retreat, he moved to Jerez, where he assisted prisoners and sick people, sought alms, and developed a hospital dedicated to Our Lady of Candlemas. His practical service grew from encounters with particular people rather than from an established institution.
In 1574 he visited the work begun by John of God in Granada and adopted its religious rule for his own hospital. He trained companions and helped extend hospital care to other towns. When local authorities sought to reorganize Jerez's hospitals, he faced resistance from interests threatened by reform. Canonized in 1996, he illustrates the demanding relationship between personal compassion and responsible organization of care.
