Biography
Joseph Sebastian Pelczar was ordained in 1864 and studied in Rome before teaching in Poland. He became a professor and rector at the Jagiellonian University, but his service extended beyond academic life. He promoted libraries, public education, and organized assistance for people facing poverty or exclusion.
In 1894 he founded the Sister Servants of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. He became auxiliary bishop of Przemyśl in 1899 and diocesan bishop the following year, emphasizing pastoral visits, clergy formation, and care for people in need. His life connects theological learning with sustained institutional responsibility. He died in 1924 and was canonized in 2003.
