Biography

Joseph Phạm Trọng Tả came from a prosperous family in Quần Cống, Nam Định, and held responsibility for local civil affairs. He was a close friend of Dominic Phạm Trọng Khảm. Arrested in 1858 with Luke Phạm Trọng Thìn, Joseph was imprisoned with both men. The three prayed together during their captivity.

Joseph was interrogated alongside his companions and rejected allegations that their religious commitment amounted to rebellion. Torture did not persuade him to abandon his faith. He was condemned to strangulation and died with Dominic and Luke in 1859. He was canonized in 1988.
