Biography

Joseph Phạm Quang Túc was a young Catholic from Hoàng Xá whose family supported his religious education and schooling. While he was still studying, officials repeatedly searched the village for Christians. On a later visit they summoned the men to present themselves, and Joseph was arrested and taken away. Several months of confinement involved beatings and other punishment.

Joseph's sister Maria Vinh noticed that the guards might allow an escape and encouraged him to leave. He declined because he believed this would expose the remaining prisoners to retaliation. He continued refusing demands to renounce Christianity and was beheaded. He died in 1862 and was canonized in 1988.
