Biography
Joseph Nguyễn Duy Khang was born at Cao Mai in Thái Bình. After his father's early death, his mother played a central part in his religious education. He entered a priest's household as a boy and later studied at Kẻ Mốt, preparing for priesthood. The seminary was forced to close when the 1861 persecution scattered Catholics and their institutions.
Joseph then accompanied Bishop Jerónimo Hermosilla into hiding. He arranged food, correspondence, and contact with Catholic communities while sharing the bishop's uncertain movements. The two were eventually arrested and taken to Hải Dương. Hermosilla was executed first, while Joseph's captivity continued until his own martyrdom later in 1861. He was canonized in 1988.
